When it comes to digital marketing, one of the most important things you can do is keep up with the latest trends. And while you may be aware of the new things happening within your own industry, you may not be quite as well versed in general trends that could help you attract customers.
So what current trends will be relevant to your business? Although this question is impossible to answer for each individual company, there are a few trends you should pay attention to, regardless of your sector. These are things that will help you engage with your audience – essentially digital marketing strategies that target demographics have responded to. We’ve looked at a few of these trends below in more detail.
1. Interact With Your Audience
Today’s audience often want more from a brand. It’s not just about presenting a product anymore, you also need to allow users to interact with your brand and its advocates. They want to see the more personal and fun side of a company. This could be anything from games and quizzes to polls and competitions. As long as these interactions are exciting, quick, and accessible, you should encourage more engagement with your audience.
As engagement generally means more leads, boosting engagement is an essential part of any digital marketing strategy. If adding interactive elements to your site or social media platforms doesn’t garner the response you’d hoped for, you can try adding prizes to up the stakes. Offering anything for free will almost always get a huge response!
2. Keep Content Simple
A few years ago, it was generally agreed that the longer the article the better. People were looking for a comprehensive guide to a topic, so wanted at least a few thousand words on the subject matter. These days, the reverse seems to be true. We’ve all heard about the decreasing attention span of today’s youth, and this is particularly evident when it comes to online content. There’s a reason short videos on TikTok and YouTube are so popular. People want easy, digestible content.
This means you should consider branching out in terms of what sort of content you’re producing. If you only use written content, perhaps try video, or set up a few webinars or workshops. Podcasts are on vogue too – they’ve been on the rise for several years. Overall, it’s sensible to think about whether your audience is currently interacting with your content in their desired format. If your target demographic is younger, unless you’re making videos and podcasts already, the answer is probably no.
3. Use Influencers
One of the most effective ways to get your brand out there is to use influencers. The number of influencers using social media platforms to promote services and products is rapidly growing, and more and more businesses are taking advantage of this. While Instagram remains the most prominent channel for influencer marketing, platforms like TikTok are also becoming increasingly popular.
And if you’re concerned that using an influencer will get expensive, remember that there are options for smaller businesses. While you don’t want to use an influencer who doesn’t have a clear record of success, if they’re interested in your product, free samples may be another way of paying your influencers. If you’re still not convinced, bear in mind that studies have shown that influencer marketing can be highly successful. One study, undertaken by the Influencer Marketing Hub, showed that in 2020, around 90% of businesses found this method of marketing to be incredibly effective.
4. Is Your Brand Green?
In the immortal words of Kermit the Frog, it’s not easy being green. Of course, we’re not referring to the colour in this instance. One of the current trends is being as sustainable as possible, and going green. There is a new rise of eco-warriors – hardly surprising, considering the state of the planet at the moment.
So what does this mean for businesses? You want to be able to offer at least one element of sustainability along the customer journey, whether it’s the product itself or the packaging it comes in. Using recycled materials could make all the difference when it comes to attracting a younger audience. And if you’re not quite ready to make the change yet, you could consider aligning your business with an eco charity, so that you’re at least taking steps in the right direction.
